For the technically inclined, these were shot with my D100, my 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens, and both mounted on a tripod so I could track them without having to hold up the whole thing which can get quite heavy. I had accidentally left the ISO at 800 which, on the D100, meant fairly grainy shots.
Of course, it also meant faster shutter speeds, so perhaps the good shots I got would not have been so good at slower speeds. I guess that's life . . . things balance out to a level of imperfection we can live with, but with which we are still not fully happy about.
