I think all of these are Yellow Crowned Night Herons, but I'm not sure on all of them.

  • I think all of the birds in this Gallery are Yellow Crested Night Herons in various stages of maturity
  • This is an adult that liked hanging around the neighbor's swimming pool.
  • Once in a while he would make its way down to the shore.
  • Others preferred a high perch to stalk whatever prey they sought . . .
  • . . . looking intently hither and fro, always seeming as if ready to pounce.
  • It gives the idea of a coiled spring ready to deploy.
  • Thing is, of all the individuals I watched, none ever moved very much, and certainly never caught anything.
  • Sure is not lacking in intensity.
  • This is a juvenile, probably wondering what he should do to look like he knows what he's doing . . .
  • Oh yeah! . . . stare intently at some nondescript spot, and if making any movements, keep them slow and deliberate.
  • Once in a while they would fly off to another perch.
  • This one sat on the remnants of an old boat lift, staring intently at a spot on the water.
  • . . . staring . . .
  • . . . finally looking as if it might move . . .
  • . . . only to relax again . . .
  • . . . and then tense up again as if spotting whatever it is they eat.
  • Nah, changed its mind. Better fly off somewhere else and do nothing.
  • Impressive wings, though.
  • I never knew if these were different birds of the same one wanting to pose for me.
  • Regardless, pose he did.
