This is a young Differential Grasshopper, also on a pansy. As mentioned in the spider gallery, just as I snapped the shot of the grasshopper, the spider jumped into the frame.

This is a young Differential Grasshopper, also on a pansy. As mentioned in the spider gallery, just as I snapped the shot of the grasshopper, the spider jumped into the frame.

  • Could not identify this bug.

  • Nine-Spotted Lady Beetle . . . less common as their numbers are declining due to habitat destruction, disease, etc.
  • This is actually a European species.
  • They look very similar.
  • Except for the spots, of course.
  • The caterpillar of the Variegated Fritillary butterfly.
  • These were all over our pansies . . .
  • I did not have my glasses on, and I realized only after looking at the photos that I was concentrating on the butt of the thing . . .
  • The rest are more flattering photos.
  • I have a lot of photographs of these things since they were both visible and striking.
  • This one looked as if it was waiting for the petals to open.
