Moonset on Pikes PeakPikes peakMoonset

  • On May 18, 2011 I was on my way to work, roughly at 5:30 in the morning. The following five photographs are of the moon over Pikes Peak.
  • There was a thin layer of clouds obscuring the moon. It gave it a fuzzy look, but the effect is still interesting.
  • I stopped at the US Airforce Academy overlook on I-25 near the Briargate exit, and snapped these photos.
  • As much as I liked them, I was a little disappointed because the moon was not that clear.
  • A month later, on June 16, 2011, I stopped at the same place to watch, and capture, the moon giving me a better show.
  • Dawn was just breaking, and I did not have to push the ISO all that much to get nice clear pictures of both the moon and Pikes Peak.
  • I watched as the moon slowly dropped to settle on the Peak.

  • A little more to the left and it would have settled right over the visitor center at the top (visible just to the left of the moon).
  • The next few all look nearly the same, but I did not know exactly which showed the moon "touching" the peak.
  • I leave it to the viewer to decide.

  • I'm calling this one the touchdown.

  • The whole process took maybe 10 minutes or less. Well worth having to stay later at work to make up getting in a tad late.
